The main principle of transport logistics, and logistics as a whole, is optimization of costs aimed at savings due to cargo transportation scale and length of hauling.

This saving is connected with the following rule: the larger is cargo, the less are transport charges per unit of weight. The same is valid for more powerful kinds of transport (railway and water transport), which are more cost effective counting on the unit of cargo weight, as compared with motorcars and aircrafts featuring lower capacity.

Saving due to increase in cargo transportation scale is provided by virtue of distribution of the constant component of transport charges among all cargo units; therefore, specific costs per unit of weight are less for larger cargoes.

Saving due to length of hauling is provided by the following rule: the longer is the route, the less are transport charges counting on the unit of distance. For example, transportation of one cargo to the distance of 800 km is cheaper than delivery of two cargoes (of the same aggregate weight) to the distance of 400 km. This effect is also called the principle of decrease, since specific costs per unit of distance are reduced as the distance of transportation increases.

Saving due to length of hauling arises by virtue of the same reasons that saving due to scale of transportation.
